Gokurakugai (Japanese: 極楽街 Hepburn: Gokurakugai, lit. "Paradise Street" or Gokuraku District) is a Japanese manga series that combines supernatural horror, action, comedy, and drama. It's written and illustrated by Yuto Sano. It has been serialized in Jump Square magazine starting from the August 2022 issue, August 4, 2022. As of August 2023, two tankobon volumes have been published. Originally, it started as a one-shot manga titled "Gokurakugai: Trouble on Third Avenue" (極楽街三番通の件 Gokurakugai San Bandōri no Ken, alternatively known as The Gokuraku District's Third Avenue Incident). The positive reception to the one-shot prompted Shueisha, the publisher, to encourage Sano to turn it into a full-fledged manga series. Consequently, Gokurakugai became a serialized manga in Shonen Jump's Jump SQ Monthly Magazine, published by Shueisha in Japan. In the North American region, Viz Media handles the online publication of the manga.[1][2]
The English version of Gokurakugai was introduced on March 2, 2023, available on platforms like the Shonen Jump app and MANGA Plus. The story follows Tao and Alma, a pair of 'troubleshooters' who, disguised as everyday problem solvers, actually combat demons.
The captivating art significantly contributes to the appeal of Gokurakugai. Every panel is meticulously crafted, paying attention to characters' appearances, clothing, and even the intricate architecture of the Gokurakugai District, which is central to the series. The intricate setting, featuring a lush atmosphere with Chinese influences, sets it apart from other manga. But it's the atypical team of protagonists, Tao and Alma, who truly capture readers' interest. They're an unconventional duo of colleagues fighting not only for humanity but also for financial gain.
