General rules[]

File extensions[]

There are several file extensions that can be uploaded to Gokurakugai Wiki, with the most common being .JPG and .PNG. Due to its lossless data compression, .PNG files are generally preferable.

Due to their lack of use and disruptive nature, animated .GIFs are not permitted. If a still image does not adequately illustrate the text it is accompanied by, the text may need to be rewritten in order to more effectively convey the intended message.

Copyrights[]

Every non-free image is used on Gokurakugai Wiki under the auspices of the fair use doctrine of the United States Fair use law. This means that they are used for informational/educational purposes, meant to identify the subject of an article and to illustrate something directly relevant to the text in its immediate vicinity. When adding an image to the wikia, be sure to add the appropriate licensing. Failure to do so can result in the image being deleted on copyright grounds.

Usage[]

Given the nature of copyrighted images, Gokurakugai Wiki tries to use them sparingly, and whenever possible on more than one single article, instead of using different pictures to illustrate the same subject. They are recommended to be used sparingly, acting only as an assistance, not as a focus. Remember, books rarely use images so neither should we.

Another thing to avoid is using too many images in one article. In addition to the widespread belief that it has aesthetic issues, this practice directly contradicts the rule that we should only use images when necessary.

Users are allowed to use up to three copyrighted images on their user pages as long as they are also used in canon or fanon articles. Users are not allowed to upload the aforementioned images for use on anything other than their user space, threads, or blogs. There are a few exclusions, like using tools akin to sandboxes to improve articles.

Galleries[]

Article galleries are permitted as long as there are a significant number of images. It is preferable to put the majority of the images in the gallery section of a page because, as was already mentioned, images should only be used sparingly within the text of articles.

For tight organization, additional images must always be contained within galleries for short articles (typically less than 500 words). Having ten images for an article with so little content is excessive; the information in the article should outweigh the number of images.

Sourcing[]

Each image must clearly identify its source. If the image isn't properly sourced in a certain amount of time, it might be deleted.

Formats and cropping[]

  1. Images that are not free to use must not be changed. The image will be removed if it has been altered, has watermarks, text, or montages that deface the original work of the copyright holders.
    1. The only exception to this rule is when we are forced to use concept art images to represent a character in its corresponding infobox due to a lack of suitable screenshots. In this situation, changing the image's background to remove or change it is acceptable from an aesthetic standpoint.
  2. Images that are not free to use should only have their color levels, shading, brightness, contrast, and/or alpha improved if necessary.
  3. Screenshots should ideally be submitted in their original aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9) unless they would benefit from cropping.
    1. In accordance with the rules governing closeups, an image that includes blank space or components other than the subject should be cropped to isolate the subject.
    2. Cropping an already-uploaded image will result in a lower pixel ratio if these elements are removed, which will lower overall fidelity if resizing is done to maintain the ratio. The removal of such features must be carried out with an equivalent unedited high-quality image and then revised to meet our image ratio requirements in order to meet Gokurakugai Wiki quality standards.

Quality[]

  1. The image must be of the best possible quality.
  2. Extreme facial closeups should be avoided, except for character infoboxes; exceptions can be made.
  3. It must be clearly visible, even in fan-made images, and images that are heavily blurred are unacceptable.

Replacement[]

When an image's original file is of poor resolution or quality, replacing (overwriting) it may be necessary. In this case, the original picture must be replaced by exactly the same version with better quality.
